Waterfall jumping, sliding, swimming, scrambling, trekking and then repeat. Do these along a 5-kilometer river through a canyon over several waterfalls for more or less 3 hours. That pretty sums up the action-packed canyoneering in Cebu. Did that excite you? 🙂
Canyoning or canyoneering is adding to the growing list of activities to do in Cebu such as mountain climbing, whale watching, island hopping and more. This adventure starts from Kanlaob, Alegria downstream to Kawasan Falls in Barangay Matutinao, Badian. Now, it is slowly becoming one of the hottest destination for travelers, adrenaline junkies and adventurous souls.
First of all, let me give a word of caution that canyoneering is by nature a risky activity. Technically, it should only be done by skilled and trained individuals. But in this case, you will only get a few minutes of orientation, a helmet, life jacket and aqua shoes to start. You will be accompanied by experienced guides and all you have to do is listen very carefully. They will show you how to jump, where to jump and whatnot. It will be slippery all the way so always watch your step as much as your head.
Secondly, some of the following photos I took were done at my own risk. I had to climb up or take a different path than the rest to take these shots. Thanks to action cameras, we’re able to capture our adventure but it ‘s still a big challenge to get non-blurry shots. Just remember to ask permission and advice from your guide if you want to do something (stupid 😀 ). Let me share these photos that will excite you to try canyoneering in Cebu one of these days.
15 Exciting Photos of Canyoneering in Cebu
1. The first jump
It is always exciting, at the same time scary, when you try something for the first time. Your heart beats faster, your knees start shaking and you feel like backing out. But once you take that first step, that little push to yourself, that leap of faith, all the rest should fall into places, like literally. 🙂
2. When in mid-air
That feeling when the adrenaline in your system come rushing through your veins, your heartbeat comes to a halt and POOF, your head’s underwater and breathing fine. Honestly, this is one of the best feeling which only happens in split seconds while in mid-air.
3. The waiting game
Jumping or sliding down the canyons should be done one at a time to make sure the guides are in control. So at some point, you’ll have to wait for your turn while you hear the rest scream and shout for their lives. And that is where the excitement builds up right?
4. The slidefest
If you enjoy the slides, you’re childhood should be fun. And now that you’ve grown up, it’s time to take it to the next level. One of the fun features I love is the thrilling natural slide. Don’t worry coz it is slippery enough but you could use some leggings for protection.
5. The water slide
If you liked the slide, then you’ll love the water slide. This time you just lay down and go with the flow of the water down to a mini waterfall about 5 feet high. Honestly, I would love to try this at least 5 times. 🙂
6. The plunge
The fun part in every water slide is the plunge. Adding to the action is the gushing of the cool blue-green waters into the lagoon. Once you’re in the water, you’ll surely want to try again. Unfortunately, it is a one way traffic so no time for take twos.
7. The canyons
Canyons are masterpieces of Mother Nature. These are formed when water cuts through the bedrock stone, forming narrow gorges with numerous drops and beautifully sculpted walls. This took millions of years to materialize so take a few minutes to appreciate its beauty.
8. The water massage
During the traverse you will find a lot of mini waterfalls where you can lay back and feel the refreshing flow of the waters on your back. Make sure the current is not so strong it might take you away.
9. The Temple Run
LOL! for the lack of words. There are various obstacles you will encounter along the way such as fallen trees. You can have that crazy photo moments if you get bored while trekking. 😀
10. The ant life
Ever felt so small like an ant? This stunning view of the canyon made us look like tiny insects. Just speechless!
11. The stalactites
Another interesting feature you will see are stalactites covered in moss hanging up the canyon at some areas. Don’t miss this on your way.
12. The adrenaline-pumping jumps
There are at least 5 jumping stations I could remember varying in height. If you love cliff diving, then this adventure will surely give you a treat. For me this is more exciting due to the presence of rushing waters and jagged rock walls that gives an extreme ambiance.
13. This jumper’s point-of-view
This was a difficult one because the landing spot was limited. While the rest took the 5-foot jump, we (w/ a guide) climbed up a boulder for a 25-foot jump.
14. The last jump
When you reach the Station 2 of Kawasan Falls, it may be considered the last jumping site that varies from 30-40 feet high. Of course you have the option to pass and take a different route, but not me. Don’t be fooled by the photo below coz that’s so freaking high
15. The Kawasan Falls
And last but not the least, you get to see the view of Kawasan Falls from the top. Jumping from the top is prohibited but I think I wouldn’t even dare if given the chance. This is considered the end point of your canyoneering in Cebu adventure so, congratulations! 😀
Again I would like to iterate that some of the photos were carefully taken. I just want to share how extremely exciting this adventure can be but please keep safety first. Okay! Very nice photos! Canyoneering from Alegria to Badian is an adventure of a lifetime! We are trying to find another canyoneering site for even more adventures!
So true! Island hopping, mountain climbing, can be done in other provinces in the Philippines but this one is an adventure to try in Cebu. I’m pretty sure there may be in some areas but this is on top of the list. Looking forward to your awesome exploration guys! 😀
For now, that’s the only fast-flowing river in Cebu we know that is sandwiched by ravines. That’s why it’s perfect for canyoneering. We’re going to explore Cebu to check if there are other rivers like this.
How much is the cost per person for this?
